Winnetka kitchens and baths lean heavily toward marble. Here is what we have been seeing on recent visits — etched islands, dulled vanities — and how each was brought back.
Winnetka has one of the highest concentrations of marble kitchens and baths of any town we serve. Calacatta and Carrara islands, marble vanity tops, and full marble shower surrounds are the norm in homes from the historic east side to newer builds west of Green Bay Road. That also means we see a lot of the same problems. The pattern: beautiful marble, everyday etching Marble is calcium carbonate. Lemon juice, wine, tomato sauce, vinegar-based cleaners and many bathroom products dissolve a microscopic layer of the surface on contact, leaving a dull mark in the exact shape of the spill. On a polished island this is unavoidable in a household that actually cooks.
